Overview
This is a short, 4-part course for people who already play an instrument but have had little or no exposure to jazz or improvisation. Think of this as "Jazz 101".
We’ll work on one simple tune per session, talk about interacting within the jazz ensemble, learn about improvisation methods and discuss practice techniques.
Groups will be limited to 7 participants plus bass and drums.
Who can join?
Anyone who plays an instrument to roughly Grade 5 level.
When?
This course will be held on Wednesday mornings in June 2026.

Overview
Practical workshops are run as 7-piece ensembles, comprising bass, drums, piano, guitar (or vibraphone), and 3 front line instruments, such as saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, trombone. Other instruments can be accommodated if not listed here!
Over a period of 8-10 weeks, we explore a range of jazz repertoire, styles and improvisation methods. We’ll talk about interacting within the jazz ensemble, learn about improvisation methods and discuss practice techniques. At the end of the term there’s a gig (open to the public) where each band performs a set.
Who can join?
This is an intermediate group. The average participant is someone who has played some jazz already but is at the stage of wanting to gain more experience in a small jazz group, and get to grips with improvisation. It is possible to join with very limited knowledge of jazz harmony and theory but if this is the case, you might be encouraged to attend the theory course!
When?
The ensembles run for 8-10 weeks per term, with some during the day and some in the evening. Please get in touch to find out the dates for the next course.
Where?
Courses currently take place in a community hall in Worthing. Please submit an enquiry for the exact address.
How much?
The practical workshops cost £300 per person per term. This includes all resources, tuition and the end-of-term performance opportunity. Fees and course length are subject to change and are confirmed before each course.
Overview
